What is an optical interconnect? A way of sending signals from one part of an integrated circuit to another using light.

Optical interconnects are a replacement for electrical interconnects. Traditionally, connections within an integrated circuit have been electrical signals sent over metal wires. To overcome the high latency and power consumption of this approach, optical interconnects, which transmit signals using light, were developed.
