Alex is the CEO of Ayar Labs. Prior to founding this company, she was the Energy Entrepreneurship Leader at MIT, founded Everyday Science, and led energy efficiency programs at EnerNOC, the first smart grid company. She holds an MBA from MIT.
Mark Wade President, Chief Scientist, and Co-Founder
Mark is the President and Chief Scientist of Ayar Labs. Prior to founding Ayar Labs, he led the group that designed the optics in the world’s first processor to communicate using light. He holds a PhD from University of Colorado.
Chen Sun Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder
Chen is the CTO of Ayar Labs. Prior to founding this company, he led the group that designed the electronics and optical device drivers in the world’s first processor to communicate using light. He holds a PhD from MIT.
Vladimir Stojanovic Chief Architect and Co-Founder
Vladimir is the Chief Architect of Ayar Labs. Prior to founding Ayar Labs, he led the team that designed the world’s first processor to communicate using light. Vladimir is also an associate professor of EECS at UC Berkeley, and was one of the key developers of the Rambus high-speed link technology. He holds a PhD from Stanford University.
Daniel Armbrust Board of Directors Observer and Advisory Board Member
Dan was formerly Vice President of 300mm Semiconductor Operations at IBM, and brings a wealth of experience in high-volume manufacturing to Ayar Labs. He also served as CEO of SEMATECH and was the co-founder and CEO of Silicon Catalyst.
Srinath Kalluri Advisory Board Member
Srinath led the photonics team that delivered on the promise of Intel Si Photonics with first product delivery in 2016, and then as Head of R&D for Intel Silicon Photonics, where he led overall product development for the division. Prior to joining Intel, he was the Director of Transmission Components at Lumentum, Founder and CTO of Ilumed, and VP of Product Development at VSK Photonics. He holds a PhD from USC.
Frank Johnson Advisory Board Member
Frank was VP and GM of Intel’s Americas Industry Sales Group, with responsibility for sales and marketing in North and Latin America. He currently serves as Chief Information Officer for the City of Baltimore. He holds an MS from Johns Hopkins.
Aaron VanDevender Board of Directors Observer
Aaron is Chief Scientist at Founders Fund. Prior to Founders Fund, he was CTO of The Prosperity Institute, designed single-photon and single-atom quantum computers at NIST, and patented the fastest transparent optical switch. He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Roy Meade Vice President of Manufacturing
Roy has 20 years of experience in CMOS, and is an inventor on 50 patents. He leading the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) development effort at Micron Technology, and he led the optics program there with MIT, CU Boulder, and UC Berkeley, where he developed the first monolithic SiPh transceiver on bulk CMOS. Prior to Micron, he managed an engineering team focused on packaging at optical transceiver startup Yafo Networks. He received his MBA from Duke and his MS in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech.
Rajeev Ram Technical Principal and Co-Founder
Rajeev leads the Physical Optics and Electronics (POE) Group at MIT, where he is a Professor of Electrical Engineering. Prior to founding Ayar Labs, he led the MIT lab that made the optical devices in the first processor to communicate with light. He was the Program Director for ARPA-E at the United States Department of Energy from 2010 to 2012, and the Director of Center for Integrated Photonics at MIT from 2004 to 2012. He is also a Founder and Board Member of Pharyx Inc. He holds a PhD from UC Santa Barbara.
Milos Popovic Technical Principal and Co-Founder
Milos is an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Boston University. Prior to founding Ayar Labs, he led the University of Colorado, Boulder lab that developed the optical devices in the first processor to communicate with light. He has authored or co-authored over 25 patents and 150 journal and conference papers. He holds a PhD from MIT.
Elad Alon Advisory Board Member and Technical Principal
Elad is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley and co-director of the Berkeley Wireless Research Center. He has held founding, consulting, or visiting positions at Locix, Lion Semiconductor, Cadence, Xilinx, Wilocity, Oracle/Sun Labs, Intel, AMD, Rambus, Hewlett Packard, and IBM Research, where he worked on analog, digital, and mixed-signal integrated circuits for high-speed communications, computing, and test and measurement. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford.

Embedded Systems Engineer
Responsible for design, programming, firmware, and integration of embedded systems and/or microcontrollers to aid automation and control of electrical-optical systems-on-chip. You will work as a part of a small team in a dynamic startup environment, taking an active role in design reviews, proposing and evaluating technical solutions, writing design specifications and test requirement documents, etc. The ideal candidate is a hands-on self-starter who is able to develop and complete work based on input from colleagues and who can effectively manage his or her own time to take projects to completion with limited supervision and guidance.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent skills and/or experience;
- Experience programming microcontrollers and/or FPGAs for embedded applications
- Proficiency in synchronous digital systems design
- Ability to develop embedded programs in C or C++;
- Experience with standard interfaces (e.g. SPI, I2C, USB, etc.)
- Proficient with lab instrumentation (e.g. Oscilloscopes, DMM, Logic analyzers, etc.)
The ideal candidate would also have:
- Ability to prototype, design, and assemble PCB-level hardware, including component selection, managing communication interfaces, and component selection
- Work experience with Eagle, DipTrace, or Allegro PCB design tool
