The Photonics in the Package for Extreme Scalability (PIPES) program is sponsored by DARPA. The program has charged various research teams with expanding the use of optical technologies to enable new system architectures, such as disaggregated architectures, that can support the growth of highly data-intensive applications such as artificial intelligence (AI), high performance computing (HPC), and cloud.
